Tehran, 6–9 October 2026
The 12th International Congress on Pulmonary Diseases, Intensive Care and Tuberculosis was held in Tehran on 6–9 October 2026. The meeting was organised by the National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NRITLD), affiliated with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Prof. Guive Sharifi took part as a speaker in the session on the lung and the nervous system.
This is the twelfth edition of the international congress devoted to pulmonary disease, intensive care, and tuberculosis. NRITLD, part of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, was the host institution. The published programme was prepared with collaborating organisations including the World Health Organization, the European Respiratory Society, the International Association of Noninvasive Ventilation, the ERAS Society, Oxford International Development Group, Acute Internal Medicine and Medical Intensive Care, the World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders, the Turkish Thoracic Society, and the Lung Health and Intensive Care Society.
Congress leadership, as announced for the meeting, was Prof. Ali Akbar Velayati as president, Prof. Hamidreza Jamaati as vice president, Dr Atefeh Abedini as scientific director, and Dr Elham Ghazanchaei as executive director.
Prof. Guive Sharifi, board-certified neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery, joined the faculty panel for the discussion of the lung and the nervous system. Breathing, airway protection, and recovery after critical illness all depend on the link between the respiratory system and the nervous system — from the control of ventilation to the care of patients who need both pulmonary and neurosurgical judgement.
The session sat inside a wider programme that also listed neurosurgery related to the lung among its topics. A short recording from the panel is included below.
The official programme covered acute and chronic respiratory failure, sleep-disordered breathing, ear, nose and throat disease linked to the lung, pulmonary rehabilitation, tobacco control, interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, paediatric lung disease, intensive-care management, airway management, heart and lung transplantation, COVID-19, occupational lung disease, COPD and asthma, tuberculosis, lung cancer, cardio-oncology, obesity, pharmacology, artificial intelligence in medicine, and thoracic surgery.
Exhibition stands alongside the halls included pharmaceutical and respiratory-care partners. Photographs from the floor show colleagues at those stands as well as the faculty group on stage beneath the congress mark for 6–9 October 2026.
